Finally get around to read Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap And Others Don’t by Jim Collins.  Actually I am reading it on my iPhone 6, and I have to say I don’t mind since my reading time is squeezed to and from work during commuting.  When you barely have any wiggle room for your hand on a super-packed train in the morning, reading off a small screen is the only option you have, unless an iPhone 6-size paperback version of the book exists out there.

I’ve heard of servant leadership which I thought it’s the ‘highest level of leadership’ or the ‘newest leadership in 21st century’ but have never heard of Level 5 Leadership. I am on chapter 3 but the book is already adding to my existing ‘leadership literature’ database.  Can’t wait to finish it!

Currently reading: The Luther College Story, 1913-2013: A Century Of Faithfulness In Education

Luther College is a high school located in Saskatchewan, Canada. Last month I went to a reunion and got the book and token as gifts! I hope I can finish the book in a few months.

A trio of books

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I can’t remember the last time I took out books at one of HK’s public libraries, I really can’t. Today I took out 3 books, 1 on Twitter and 2 on survey – the research kind.

Not sure what I want to get out of the 2 on survey but I guess  I will skim them through and see what jumps out at me. The Twitter one is definitely an easier read no doubt about it. It’s social media! and I have been trying to brush up my Twitter techniques. I have been using more of the blue birdie but found it hard to master. I am looking forward to reading this book.

A movie for male authors, writers and bloggers?

Ruby Sparks (2012) starring Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan.

The girl of your dream materializes from your very own words?! I have to see this movie.

Rings of……

I’d need a spouse wouldn’t I for the third option. For the first two rings, I realllllly don’t want to be tempted by either of them, heck of a temptation to resist. So I am running to the pub for a proper drink, and that’s why I didn’t vote.

Horns of……

I just realized,

Horn of Joramun, brings back giants from the ground (Game of Thrones)

Horn of Valere, brings back dead heroes (Wheel of Time)

Horn of Cahbhadh, brings back ancestors from the spirit world (Merlin)

Which one would you pick?

An Identity. What identity?

Twitter

With 99% academic books, 50% comics and novels gone and,

My profile bio on Twitter says

“Take my arm, my heart, but you cannot have my books. Victor Yeung | If my library chronicles my life story, my study holds my identity. Alberto Manguel”

So……my books are gone. I no longer have those books, novels and comics. My pants are on fire.

If the old books (elementary, high school) are gone, and I have new ones (university), does that mean my Identity has Changed?

Does it make sense? Can someone’s identity be changed?

Does that mean my old identity is out the window and I will never see it again?

How long will this identity last?

Oh I am overthinking, Cosmic Universe? Thanks

50% comics and novels……gone

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A month back, in addition to the 99% of academic books and textbooks and assignments gone, I also threw out (meaning recycled/donated) 50% of my comics and novels from my high school days.

Why?

sigh*

I just have to.

Not enough space, it’s time, time to move on, time to let go. Cliche hey, but that’s because they are true.

Anyways, I threw away all my Ladybird Key Words Reading Scheme or Peter and Jane as I used to call them when I was a kid.

My Chicken Soup series donated to The Book Attic at Central.

Some comics are gone.

Chinese and English novels I know I won’t read again made up the majorities of the pile on the table.

I don’t think I had any non-fiction in the pile as I didn’t get into the genre until university.

Childhood Books that remain on my bookshelves are:

The Berenstain Bears – Big Chapter Books, The Bear Scouts – A collection I am very proud of, didn’t stop collecting until around the 9th grade. I think I am just a few books short of the complete collection. A collection that traced back to the 4th grade.

Anything earlier than that belongs to a Japanese translated into Chinese comic called  <足球小將>, Captain Tsubasa. A collection I am also very proud of and didn’t stop collecting until shortly after university. Sadly, it’s incomplete.

Back to the 50%. They are gone now and made way for books I’ve collected and read from university.

And if I stack the 50% one by one, they would take up 1 pile floor to ceiling ~9 feet high. Doesn’t take up much space eh.

A month back……99% academic books……gone

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A month back in this big city and the big, and I mean really big book-related thing I did was THREW OUT 99% MY HIGH SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUFF. 1% = 12th grade that I think I still have use of.

Definition of stuff = textbooks, assignments,  class notes, folders, etc. A picture worth a thousand words.

Definition of threw out = recycled

Debated a while whether I should post photos of my textbooks, exercise books, and assignments.

They are really really really personal to me, so I decided to post selected few.

Feel like should be and could be a 1000+ words post but truth be told, the moment has past. I threw the stuff out second week I am back, meaning second week this month, and this post written last week of the month. I have thought of a better way to describe my emotions and feelings at time of throwing and will be shown on a different post.

Anyways, in the end, I threw out:

  • ~5 assignments from 4th-7th grade (I only had 5 left going into high school)
  • ALL Secondary 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

I did a mental calculation in my head: if I could stack them up, there would be 2 piles, each ~9 feet high (floor to ceiling). That’s it, that’s all I need –  36 ft^3  or 1 m^3 of space.

Funny how 5+ years of stuff doesn’t take up much space when you think in scientific terms yet still not enough space in a typical HK flat. What.
